Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to stay in the river?
No. You can pick up our kayaks and paddleboards any day of the week and take them anywhere you want throughout Schoolcraft County. You will be asked to leave a phone number and to give a relative location for safety purposes only. We can transport the kayaks and paddleboards on Thursdays after 5 and Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
What kayaking/paddleboarding experience is best for me?
Traversing the Manistique River is best for novice kayakers or paddleboarders. The river is sheltered by the Manistique Harbor and doesn’t normally get very rough. If you have never kayaked or paddleboarded before, we suggest taking a nice, quiet paddle down the Manistique River. Lake Michigan is for more experienced kayakers and paddleboarders as the lake can become rough quickly. We only ask that you do not blend the two experiences together. It is very unsafe to be around the break wall (and lighthouse) so we ask that if you start in the river you stay in the river. We will help you choose the best experience for you and your group.
Do I have to bring my own life jacket?
No. We offer life jacket rentals for infants, kids, and adults. Our life jackets are Coast Guard approved and must be worn at all times.
What else does Blue-Mystique offer?
Blue-Mystique is much more than just a kayak rental store. We also rent paddleboards and bicycles for your next Manistique adventure. Art classes are also offered on most Thursdays and Saturdays. Please check out our Facebook page or the community calendar at www.discovermanistique.com to find more details about our art classes. In addition, we offer a quaint shopping experience in our shop. You can find t-shirts, hats, signs, candles, and many more items for sale in our shop.
What is your cancellation policy?
You may cancel your reservation by email or telephone. 100 % refund for cancellations 5 days prior to scheduled rental date. Any cancellations less than 5 days WILL NOT receive any form of a refund.
What happens if I need to be rescued?
Before you head out, Blue Mystique staff explains the safe boundaries for your excursion. You will also view the National Weather Forecast to acknowledge any weather warnings and small craft advisories. In addition, you must wear your Personal Flotation Device at all times during your trip. Therefore, if you disregard the instructions given in advance and you must be rescued, you will be responsible for any costs of the rescue operation.
